The Jreck Subs Company was started in 1967 by five Carthage Central High
School teachers: Ellis Martin, Keith Waltz, Jerry Haley, Charles Lehman,
and Robert Martin, who wanted to make extra money for their families.
The first sub "shop" was a converted school bus that was parked outside
the U.S. Army post in Watertown, NY. The business went so well that
they formed a corporation in 1968 called Jreck Subs Inc., which was
derived from the first letters of the five owners' names. After
obtaining some financial backing, the corporation opened a bakery to
produce sub rolls on a daily basis.
By 1974, there were twenty Jreck Subs Shops from Massena to Syracuse. Since then, Jreck Subs has grown to over forty stores in Northern and Central New York, and plans for significant growth are realistically close... Annual food shows put on by Jreck Subs Inc. better acquaint the Franchisees with various national vendors of both the food and food service equipment industries.
